The Somali-Norwegian Doctors’ Association was established in 2023 by a group of doctors and medical students of Somali origin. The primary aim of the association is to establish a professional and social network for doctors who share similar backgrounds and sometimes similar challenges.

Secondly, we recognise that the Somali community in Norway faces unique difficulties both in regards to health literacy and trust in the medical establishment to name a few. We believe that a network of Somali-Norwegian doctors is best equipped to educate, help and support the community in these concerns.

Thirdly, as the Somali diaspora is far-reaching, there are a multitude of associations throughout the world dedicated to Somali doctors. We seek to collaborate with our sister organisations to share experiences and knowledge for the betterment of our profession and communities. As such, we have an ongoing collaboration with the Swedish-Somali, Finnish-Somali and Danish-Somali Doctors’ Associations.

Finally, in the future our goal is to work on the Horn of Africa to learn from, support and assist our Somali colleagues in building a stronger health care system in our homelands.
